Myths & Misperceptions

  • Misperception: Many believe that cannabis dispensaries attract unwanted crowds which can lead to loitering, increased crime rates, and unsafe neighborhoods.

Reality: Dispensaries tend to attract a wide variety of customers and do not increase crime rates. In fact, many studies show that the presence of a dispensary may even lower criminal activity by reducing black market sales. Operating under strict security and regulatory guidelines, dispensaries are safe and secure establishments that contribute positively to the community.

  • Misperception: Some fear the presence of cannabis dispensaries will decrease property values in the surrounding area.

Reality: In fact, research from Colorado and Washington where cannabis is also legalized, suggest that property values near dispensaries may actually increase, likely due to the overall economic growth and increased foot traffic in the area.

  • Misperception: Some people believe cannabis sold in dispensaries is unregulated and unsafe.

Reality: All licensed cannabis retailers must have their products rigorously tested for potency, contaminants, and pesticides to ensure it meets Massachusetts health and safety standards. These regulations make it safer than products purchased from the black market.

  • Misperception: There is concern that dispensaries increase youth access to cannabis and encourage underage use.

Reality: Licensed dispensaries are highly regulated and must follow strict age verification policies. The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission enforces stringent guidelines to ensure that cannabis marketing and packaging is not designed to target minors.

  • Misperception: Some assume the presence of recreational dispensaries leads to a significant surge in cannabis consumption.

Reality: While local dispensaries often lead to more open discussion in the community and usage may be more visible, research conducted in states where cannabis has been legalized suggest no significant increase in consumption with usage patterns stabilizing over time.
